Card 02.01 General information

THE RISKS:

  • Avoidable accidents (caused by lack of information)
  • Confusion, indecision and uneasiness while managing emergencies
  • Worker's behavioural anarchy
  • Farm failings
  • Third party damages
  • Sanctions (caused by lack of normative fulfilment)

It is necessary to remind that:
Warning and security signals are of fundamental importance: their goal is to improve prevention and protection measures efficacy in the Farm.
Signals:

  • remember the rules to follow  addressed to people who all ready know the Farm and have been "trained" at work (workers);
  • communicate useful information concerning the right behaviour people must keep in precise areas or situations - addressed to people who do not know the Farm (visitors, friends or customers).

PRACTICAL AND OPERATING INDICATIONS:

Besides duties, the presence of warning and safety signals is a sign of employer's good will. This will help each and every person to have excellent safety conditions in the Farm.

Through signals it shall/must be easy to identify:

  • farm areas with a high level of risk;
  • which behaviour to keep indifferent areas and conditions;
  • how to bring help and valuable indications.

The most common form of communication is that of signals for it is easy to comprehend (universality) and for its rapidity. Signals have forms and colours with a precise significance and they are grouped in families:

  • Round shape + white internal part + red border and band + black symbol = "WATCHOUTTO ...";
  • Round shape + light blue / blue internal part + white symbol = "ITISCOMPULSORY ..."
  • Triangular shape + yellow internal part + black border + black symbol = "WARNING...";
  • Rectangular/square shape + red internal part + white symbol = "FIREFIGHTING: ..."
  • Rectangular/square shape + green + white symbol = "FIRSTAIDANDEMERGENCYEXIT ...".

Signals dimensions are proportional to the need of make them quite visible even from certain distance:

DISTANCE (m) DIAGONAL (cm)
10 30
20 60
30 100
50 160

Signals are given by: placards, floor indications, light signals, sound signals, sign signals and verbal communications.

Signal materials shall be the most resistant (to bumping, bad weather etc.).

It is necessary to keep the signals up to date and change the damaged or removed one.

It is necessary to inform and "form" the people in charge about hazardous product labels and "safety cards" (they shall be found at dealer's, if they are not at people's disposal). It is necessary to remember that soon these labels will be changed with others by EU Community norms.

FURTHER INDICATIONS AND ADVICE

  • It is necessary to inform and train workers on signal's knowledge.
  • Pictogram s on machinery are part of signals and shall be restored when they detach or became unrecognisable.
  • It is necessary to use, whenever possible, "informative posters" to synthesize the law in force about "safety at work" and the "behaviour to follow" in different farm areas (for example in the plant protection product depot to prescribe the DPI use before taking any action inside it).
