Card 05.11 Pneumatic/electric pruner

 

THE RISK:

  • Fingers and hand cutting/shearing (due to breakdown; support de formation; balance loss; stumbling; fall caused by ground unevenness and carelessness of the operator him/herself and of others)
  • Musculoskeletal pains and soreness/stiffness (wrong ergonomic positions and upper limbs repetitive movements)
  • Fall from heights (use of ill-placed ladder and presence of non-fenced off mezzanine)
  • Tiredness and irritation (prolonged exposure to noise)

 

PRACTICAL AND OPERATING INDICATIONS:

 

Pruners shall be provided with:

  • handle with ergonomic hold;
  • “dead man switch” control type (pruners must not activate without the operator’s will);
  • control protection against accidental activation.

 

The operator shall check he/she is in the most steady position while working.

 

Whenever possible, it is advisable to keep pruners in plain sight.

 

Whenever possible, it is advisable to perform pruning operations under shoulders’ height.

 

Work shall be organized in a way the operator is allowed to pause frequently for resting his/her articulations (wrist, arms and rachis). Provide the operator with a roller to keep cables away from his/her movements. Cables shall not hamper worker’s movements.

If other operators are nearby, the worker must remember not to interfere with their positions and activities (for example, on truck there must be no more than two workers on each side).

 

It the operator is on the truck, it is necessary to hook him/her against falling risks.

 

During pauses and every time pruners are not used, they shall not be left in disarray, but they shall be put in their box and closed to avoid any touching.

 

If it is necessary to clean pruners or carry on their maintenance, the operator must disconnect the feeding first.

 

Operator shall always use the following DPI: safety shoes, gloves and goggles.

 

FURTHER INDICATIONS AND ADVICE

  • If workers are exposed to loud noise, they shall use earplugs and safety earmuffs (>85 dB, prudent even at >80 dB).
  • The pruner shall be operated only by authorized and fully formed operators. Staff shall attend specific training courses and their real skills shall be checked.
